Together: Spend Time Apart From Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s Hellish Body Horror Romance

August 6, 2025 by Kevin

2 out of 5 body limbs (has some good moments, but is overall bad)

Together is one of those movies I saw purely for the leads involved, and it does neither any favors.  The films is one of those sad domestic dramas about a fractured relationship that’s (thankfully) spiced up by a body horror movie, but as good as that body horror is, leads Alison Brie and Dave Franco have a shocking lack of onscreen chemistry that makes you hope their real-life relationship isn’t reflected here.

(3) Together – Official Trailer (2025) Dave Franco, Alison Brie – YouTube

Couple Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie) are on the rocks of love.  Tim desires to pursue his dreams of rockstardom and Millie…. Is so underdeveloped that I have no idea what she wants.  They move from the city to an isolated cabin in the woods (presumably for Millie’s teaching job, though it’s not specified) and go hiking in said surrounding woods only to fall into a cave.  After lemmingly spending the night down there, both start noticing bizarre changes in their bodis and discover a horrifying secret lurking just outside their front door.

Together has many flaws, but the largest, most gaping one is the miscasting of Dave Franco.  While he’s shown himself to be a very capable comic actor, Franco is completely out of his depth dramatically, not helped by Tim being irritating on the page.  Brie fares a bit better despite her underwritten role, but ironically, the two are strongest when apart.  I didn’t know who these people were or care about their relationship, but perhaps 2 actors with chemistry could have made it go down easier.

What’s ultimately going on in Together is creatively creepy and the lore surrounding it is gonzo, but because the dynamic at its center feels false, it doesn’t resonate.  Almost nobody reacts believably to any situation here and some scenes are unintentionally hilarious (particularly one in a bathroom and another in the cave), so me and my sister were gob smacked as our cinema’s lone occupants.  Something good Could have come from this, but it’s a bad showcase for its leads’ talent that left me wishing I’d sought another cinematic lover that day.  Together has good gross-out material and creative lore, but fumbles its central relationship in miscasting and undercooked characters.  I’ll be seeing other movies instead of staying with this one.

Rated R for Violent/Disturbing Content, Sexual Content, Graphic Nudity, Language, and Brief Drug Content (you will never guess what that drug content refers to)
